Once upon a time, this type of ironstone lavabo font and basin lived in a Catholic church, near the entrance. The font, or tank, probably held holy water for parishioners to use as they entered. Though we'll never know the exact history of this beautiful old French vessel and basin, we like to think it held spiritual significance to individuals as a reminder of baptismal promises.
Today, the vintage lavabo is a common feature in many gardens in Europe and the U.S. as a decoration whose practical use has been long forgotten. Used as a wall hanging, inside or out, the tank can be filled with flowers or greenery. The basin can hold potted plants or fresh water for your feathered friends. Indoors, fill it with dried branches or stalks. With the flat bottoms of each piece, the possibilities are endless and can be moved around your living space as needed.
Many terms exist for this 3-piece set, including wall fountain, wash basin, water tank, water dispenser or bath sink. In many European languages, lavabo is the word used for wash basin or sink.

Item Condition
VERY good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Mild crazing of glaze, especially noted in the basin. Overall minimal scratches, marks, stains, soil and residue present. Holes in tank and basin present to hang. No chips or cracks noted, though both pieces have irregularities in the glaze and surface from manufacturing. The brass spigot is tightly secured, though untested.
