Antique Chalkware Religious Shadow Box with Holy Family (c.1900s)

This antique religious shadow box features the Holy Family - Mary, Jesus and Joseph - under a gold alter with layered bits and pieces from a garden scene. Hand painted chalkware figures are surrounded by ruched ivory fabric with a small paper label that reads: "Jesus Mary Joseph Enlighten Us Assist Us Save Us”. 

This hard-to-find religious artwork was often displayed in churches, on altars and at religious ceremonies during the late 1800s to early 1900s. 

The frame is gessoed and painted gold. The glass appears to be original and has been wiped to removed dust and debris. The frame back includes original paper, tape and hanging wire. The entire back is loose (as common with old shadow boxes), so we have reinforced it with clear tape to protect it. The entire piece could be disassembled and rebuilt to secure it safely by buyer.

Item Condition

Good antique condition with overall wear consistent with age and use. As mentioned, the backing remains loose with loss of original paper and tape. The interior figures are in very good condition with the expected dust, debris and fading. The fabric and flowers also show fading, discoloration, dust and residue. The frame finish shows crazing, separation at corners, and loss to gesso and paint. Hanging wire intact. Very fragile and should be handled with care.
