'Where are you going, my Pretty Maid?' Who doesn't love an old nursery rhyme?

Now you enjoy the Pretty Maid illustration that has captured the hearts of millions of people around the world.

This tile was produced in the 1920s by the American Encaustic Tile Company (AETCO) of Zanesville, Ohio. Illustrated by Walter Crane (1845-1915), an accomplished artist, his designs were used by various tile companies in the early 1900's. The illustration is signed in the lower right corner by Crane.

Tiles like this were used as advertising/promotional gifts. The back of the tile has "Courtesy of Arnold O. Andree Co. Chicago" with AETCO stamped into the pottery.

FACT: In certain parts of England long ago, for a gentleman to ask a maid if he could go ‘milking with her’ was tantamount to a marriage proposal. So no, this is not creepy, it simply reflects the culture of courting in 19th century England.

Use this antique tile as a trivet or hang on the wall in the nursery. Either way, you will enjoy the quaint charm of this historical illustration.
