View CollectionA little lesson on towels, led by our American antique 'show towel'. Stitched with red cotton thread on unbleached, loose, ethereal linen. Unless you’ve touched it, you can't really know how soft it feels. The perfect backdrop for a joyful needlework design. (see the peacocks?)
So, what is a show towel? It is simply a special towel with decorative accents stitched into the fabric - often displayed when company comes to visit. (thank you Wikipedia.) You need to know that back in the early 1800s, towels were mainly utilitarian. Life was hard, and 'pretty' wasn't a priority for many people.
This old girl has roots. Handmade in the first half of the 19th century and used sparingly, she's in amazing condition for her age. Now up on the auction block and looking for a forever home. ❤❤❤
