Our vintage chalkware sculpture in a lovely aged wooden frame is titled 'It Is To Laugh!' The origin of this phrase is the French phrase "C'est à rire," which, translated literally as "It is to laugh."
This hand painted plaster relief is inscribed “Copyright M. F. O. 1909” to the lower right corner and includes a brass title placard to lower center of frame.
Unsigned .. artist unknown.
This style of painted plaster, (ie: carnival chalkware), is considered folk art by today's collectors. There is evidence of re-painting and previous layers of chipped paint throughout; the most recent layer is a matte paint.

Item Condition
Shows age-related wear and accretion throughout with surface chips and scratches. There is also slight separation to frame corners though it is sturdy and strong with hanging wire intact.
There is evidence of re-painting and previous layers of chipped paint throughout; the most recent layer is a matte paint.
