Primitive, authentic and hand carved, this early burl wood bowl is the definition of resourcefulness and grit.
Consider: having to make a bowl by hand because you need it to survive illustrates a way of life our ancestors endured. One we can barely imagine. And... the lost art of self reliance.
This workhorse of a bowl was crafted from a burl (tree unknown). As you can see from the images, a knot on one end of the bowl separated or cracked. In order to rescue such an important tool of daily living, it was repaired using a piece of tin and small tacks. Such repairs were common back in the 1800s.
Utilitarian with a beauty we just don't see often today, this lovely piece of history would be content sitting on your table full of fruit or dried flowers. Not completely flat, it wobbles a bit (remember it was born from a burl).

Item Condition
Good primitive condition with wear consistent with age and use. Age-related wear on the wood includes marks, darkening, soil/residue, scratches and such. One knot in the wood separated with a crack and was repaired with a piece of tin metal and small tacks. A fragment of the hanging string remains. At some point the bowl was highly conditioned, or was perhaps used to hold butter or fat. Dated to the 19th C.
