Are you a fan of old majolica pottery? Take a close look at this little beauty and you'll be instantly smitten. The Dutch girl and her baskets, the geese at her feet, the field and village, and the glorious colors.
Our antique earthenware plate is decorated with colored lead glazes typical of majolica. Dated to the 1800s, this piece was acquired from an antique dealer closing his shop. It is marked 12 on the back, and has incised letters in the green glaze. Unfortunately we cannot make out the word - it could be the artist's name or it may be a place, common with souvenir plates. It has a George Jones-esque feel to the patter, colors, design.
We are on the hunt for more info and will update this listing when we find it. Until then, here it is for your collection!
- ONE antique majolica plate with Dutch girl and geese (as shown)
Very good antique condition with overall wear consistent with age and use. Mild crazing throughout noted - mainly on the back of the plate. Marked 12 on the back, and includes letters in the green glaze which we cannot make out. (see photo 6). The edges of the plate are not glazed. No chips, cracks or repairs. The colors are soft and beautiful with raised slip marks outlining the figures. Scalloped edge.
