Hand crafted textiles and West Virginia just seem to go together, and our antique indigo and cream overshot coverlet is a true piece of Mountaineer history. Passed down through generations, the coverlet comes from a family in the Clarksburg-Jones Run area of West Virginia. They now live in Florida, where this piece was in storage. They want someone to own this textile who'll appreciate the workmanship and history, so here we are. AMERICAN DOUBLE WEAVE COVERLET, dark blue and white, pine tree border, two joined panels.

The fabric is a double weave and was hand loomed in two pieces and hand stitched down the middle (a common practice) to create this large, heavy blanket measuring approximately 84" x 72".  The intricate geometric design includes a border of tall pine trees around the edge. There are areas of wear and discoloration, expected with an heirloom this old. Dated to the mid-1800s.

Woven coverlets were very much a part of Appalachia's middle-class life as a common rural craft. Functional and relatively inexpensive, they were used commercially in railroad cars, Civil War hospitals, servants’ quarters, as carriage blankets or photograph backdrops.
